Email Syntax Checker
Check if an email address has valid syntax and format. Catches common typos and formatting errors instantly.
About this tool
This free tool checks email syntax (format validation) only. It verifies the email follows RFC 5322 standards and catches common typos like "gmial.com" instead of "gmail.com".
For full verification (mailbox exists, not disposable, SMTP check), use the MailVeri verification service.
What is Email Syntax Validation?
Email syntax validation is the first step in email verification. It checks whether an email address follows the correct format according to RFC 5322 standards. A valid email address must have a local part (before the @), an @ symbol, and a domain part with at least one dot.
Common Email Format Issues
Our free email syntax checker detects these common problems:
- Missing @ symbol - The most basic requirement for any email address
- Multiple @ symbols - Only one @ is allowed in a valid email
- Invalid domain format - Domain must contain at least one dot (e.g., .com, .org)
- Empty local or domain parts - Both parts must contain characters
- Consecutive dots - Dots cannot appear next to each other
- Domain typos - Common mistakes like "gmial.com" or "hotmal.com"
Why Check Email Syntax?
Validating email syntax is essential for several reasons:
- Prevent typos at signup - Catch mistakes before users submit forms
- Reduce bounce rates - Invalid formats will always bounce
- Improve data quality - Clean data leads to better analytics
- Save verification credits - No point verifying obviously invalid emails
Syntax Check vs Full Verification
Syntax validation only checks the format of an email address. It cannot tell you if:
- The mailbox actually exists on the mail server
- The email is a disposable or temporary address
- The domain has valid MX records configured
- The mailbox can receive new messages
For complete email verification including SMTP validation, disposable email detection, and catch-all domain detection, use the MailVeri verification service.
Technical Details
This tool validates emails against a simplified version of the RFC 5322 standard. The local part can contain letters, numbers, and special characters including dots, hyphens, and underscores. The domain must be a valid hostname with proper top-level domain (TLD) of at least two characters.
We also check for common typos in popular email providers like Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, and Outlook. If we detect a likely typo, we'll suggest the correct domain.
Need full email verification?
Syntax checking is just the first step. MailVeri verifies that the mailbox actually exists and can receive emails.
